COVID Masking Update for Courts
On June 30, 2021, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee made a decision to lift many of the public health mitigation strategies as the State of Washington moves closer to being fully re-opened. Cowlitz County's most recent two-week COVID-19 case incidence rate is 174 cases/100,000 population.51 percent of Cowlitz County residents 16 years of age or older are fully vaccinated compared to 60.6% of the statewide population. After review of local Cowlitz County COVID-19 data, Labor and Industries Requirements, the DOH guidance, and in consultation with the local health department, the District and Superior Court Judges have decided to continue masking requirements when people serve as a juror or attend an in-person court session.
"In light of the substantial infection rate and current level of vaccinations in our community, we feel it is critical to continue masking practices in our courtrooms. We desire to provide timely access to justice for all in a manner that is as safe as possible for everyone involved", said Judge Gary Bashor, Presiding Superior Court Judge.
When the Cowlitz County Superior Court makes any further decisions on masking requirements, we will issue another press release.
